John Citizen makes sumptuous paintings that often have a sting in their tail. Interior (Two Paintings) 10 Nov. 2004 is a cool and satirical work that sits firmly within the post-Pop tradition in contemporary art. Referencing glamorous images found in design magazines and catalogues, the sitting room has been painted in an elegant style conspicuously devoid of the usual clutter of family life.
Formally and conceptually, this work is structured around the two monochrome Colour Field paintings that dominate the room, which are echoed in the presence of two matching cushions on the right-hand sofa. Here, John Citizen illustrates his conviction that much contemporary art is superficial — potentially including his own works — as are the ambitions of collectors who amass art as a display of wealth or as lifestyle accessories.
