Two jolly sailormen

Daphne Mayo | Australia 1895–1982 | Two jolly sailormen 1944 | Terracotta with decorative features in blue glaze | The University of Queensland Art Collection. Gift of the Alumni Association, 1981 | © Surf Lifesaving Foundation and the Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust

Daphne Mayo: Let There Be Sculpture | 4 November 2011 − 15 January 2012 | QAG | Free admission

This wartime work depicts a sight all too familiar to Daphne Mayo – her Sydney studio was adjacent to the wharves and next to a pub. She made several versions of the work, experimenting with various glazes and decorative details, describing this one as ‘with deft blue no. 10 glaze mixed on collars, caps and features’. The major part of the work is in unglazed terracotta.
