'Families and Fictions' focuses on works that feature the human figure and draw on established photographic traditions, especially the family snapshot. In these works, photographers use traditions in ways that are innovative and unexpected, playing on the doubling of presence and absence. Drawing on personal histories and mining family archives for images and objects, these artists create new and public memorials to family members.
'Families and Fictions' includes a number of recent acquisitions, including 'About my mother', a major new portfolio by distinguished Queensland-born photographer and performer William Yang.
