Scott Redford’s The High / Perpetual Xmas, No Abstractions 2008 is the first of his ‘proposals’ for public sculptures realised in full scale. Redford’s quotation of art-historical styles engages viewers with familiar forms — in this work he celebrates popular culture from his native Gold Coast in Queensland. Turning towards local objects of value, such as surf culture and commercial street signage, he asks an important question: why should artists expect people to find contemporary art relevant when so-called ‘kitsch’ structures are often more cherished?
