Lincoln Austin

Double cross 2010

Lincoln Austin | Australia b.1974 | Double cross 2010 | Stainless steel 82 x 42 x 50cm | Purchased 2010 with funds from Xstrata Community Partnership Program Queensland through the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation | Collection: Queensland Art Gallery

Lincoln Austin’s recent stainless steel sculptures mark a new level of maturity in his practice. While Austin is well known for his wire mesh sculptures, this is an ambitious example of a new direction, exploring the enigmatic character of highly reflective stainless steel. The acquisition of Double cross 2010 secures a significant example of this artist’s work for the Gallery’s Collection.

Double cross is the most complex form the artist has yet undertaken. It comprises 86 stainless steel plates, approximately 4000 nuts and 50 linear metres of threaded rod. Double cross delineates cube forms but on the diagonal, so that they are defined by triangular plates. Setting triangles against squares in this way gives the sculpture a complex sense of rhythm.
