Australian-born artist Ron Mueck’s In bed is one of the Gallery’s most significant new acquisitions. After working as a puppet-maker for children’s television and working in the United States with Jim Henson (of The Muppets television show fame), Mueck gained recognition as a visual artist with his inclusion in the 1997 Royal Academy exhibition ‘Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection’. Critics like Susanna Greeves place Mueck in the tradition of realist painters and sculptors who aim for an extraordinary degree of illusionism in their work. According to Greeves: ‘Mueck has created the most flawlessly hyperreal figures in art history, so effectively imitating nature that the categories of art, image, and reality seem to be suspended’.
