Television

7 October – 27 November 2011

Television has brought back murder into the home - where it belongs.
Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1955-62 was Hitchcock’s highly successful foray into directing for television. Screened weekly, the half-hour independent segments showcased the suspense and intrigue found in the daily milieu of ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Hitchcock’s dryly sardonic introductions opened and closed each episode and, coupled with Charles-François Gounod's ‘Funeral March of a Marionette’ as the theme music, ensured the series popularity with audiences. Hitchcock directed 17 episodes of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents series over seven years and the first episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour 1962-65 before retiring from directing for television.
