Abraham approaches film and installation as spaces in which to explore the operation of contradiction, repetition and the fragmentary. Trained as a painter, her films feature aspects of Indian modernity in ways that are overtly partial and personal. Her retrieval and transfer of 16mm and 8mm film footage to digital, in works such as You Are Here and Straight 8, present anew fragments from a seemingly familiar and shared yet idiosyncratic family album. The documentary-like One Way centres on Nepalese exile Shyam Bahadur, who after spending 35 years in Bangalore as a security guard faces the possibility that he may never be able to return home.
