On Three Posters 2003–08

DIGITAL VIDEO, 4:3, COLOUR, SOUND, 18 MINUTES, LEBANON, ENGLISH / CAST: RABIH MROUÉ, GEORGES ANTOINE KERBAJ AND LINA GEORGES SANEH / PRODUCTION CO: FESTIVAL AYOUL / PRINT SOURCE/RIGHTS: COURTESY OF THE ARTIST AND GALERIE SFEIR-SEMLER, BEIRUT

In 1985, a resistance fighter Jamal Satti, pre-recorded a statement for the news before he detonated his suicide bomb outside an Israeli military base. An uncut copy of Satti’s tape came into the possession of Elias Khoury, who with Mroué, saw Satti’s effort to ‘act’ and to record the best take as means through which to think about truth and representation, creating the performance Three Posters to propose three possibilities for perceiving (representational) death: via one actor, one resistance fighter: Jamal Sati, and one politician. The decision to stop performing this work came about, however, due to the ethical questions related to the reception of the artwork and its use by the international media for their own ends. The video On Three Posters by Mroué discusses the issues at stake.
