About
Ye Jiang (The Nightman Cometh) 2011
A surreal voyage into the territories of dreams, identity and memory, The Nightman Cometh by Chinese artist Yang Fudong follows the story of a forlorn, battle-scarred warrior as he journeys through a frozen landscape in search of meaning.
The surreal quest of the warrior leads him to encounters with three ghost-like figures, each of whom seems to represent a different aspect of his psyche. The film's themes of memory, identity, and reality are explored through the warrior’s encounters with these characters, as he begins to question the very nature of his existence.
The seductive staging, black and white visuals and hyper-real imagery create a captivating – but unsettling – dreamscape, filled with symbolism and metaphor.

beDevil 1993
The debut film from renowned Australian artist Tracey Moffatt, beDevil is an anthology of three hyper-stylised and compelling ghost stories, inspired by tales Moffatt heard from her family as a child.
In the first chapter, ‘Mister Chuck’, a young boy is beguiled by the ghost of an American soldier buried within a swamp near his house. In ‘Choo Choo Choo Choo’, Moffatt plays a woman whose family is haunted by spectral trains that run alongside their house. And in ‘Lovin’ the Spin I’m In’, Imelda refuses eviction from her house in order to keep vigil for the spirit of her dead son.
Addressing themes of colonialism, and cultural identity, Moffatt’s use of non-linear storytelling and dreamlike imagery creates a haunting atmosphere that lingers long after the film's conclusion.
