About
Untitled (Human Mask) 2014
A complex, multilayered work that combines elements of science fiction, documentary, and experimental cinema, Untitled (Human Mask) by multidisciplinary French visual artist Pierre Huyghe explores the fragile divide between the human and the animal world.
Set in a dystopian landscape visually inspired by an abandoned streetscape in Fukushima, the film’s narrative is centered on the daily interactions of a solitary protagonist - a monkey wearing a female human mask – who appears to be the only survivor of a manmade or natural disaster. The film’s unsettling narrative is largely observational; following the lead character as it navigates a new existence somewhere between the man-made and the natural world.
Through a series of dreamlike sequences and ambiguous narrative fragments, Untitled (Human Mask) offers a deeply philosophical meditation on the relationship between humans and animals, the fluidity and mutability of identity, and the ways in which our identities are shaped and transformed by our interactions with the natural world.

NINGWASUM 2021
Filmed at the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, Subash Thebe Limbu's cinematic science-fiction film NINGWASUM tells the story of two Indigenous time travelers (Miksam and Mingsoma) who have travelled back to the present from a future where Indigenous knowledge, science and technology are used together to develop sustainable ecosystems.
Developed over several years, the film explores 'Adivasi Futurism', a strand of futurism that brings together elements of science, indigeneity, fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction as told from the perspective of indigenous people in the Indian subcontinent, to imagine future realities.
