About
Visual artist and writer Naeem Mohaiemen’s evocative feature Tripoli Cancelled is a thought-provoking study on the effects of isolation and displacement upon the human psyche. Premiering at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival and showcased as part of Documenta 14, the film tells the story of a man named Khaled, who finds himself stranded in an abandoned airport in Tripoli for a decade after his flight to Greece is cancelled due to political unrest.
Directy based on an incident experienced by the artist’s father (where he was stranded inside Athens airport), this skillfully crafted film combines long takes and static shots to capture Khaled's struggle to maintain a sense of normalcy in an abnormal situation. In this haunting take on absence and waiting, Mohaiemen creates a mesmerizing visual narrative that invites the viewer to contemplate the meaning of time, memory, and human connection.
