About
Blood and Black Lace is a brilliantly lush giallo classic. With this film, Bava helped define an early model of not only giallo cinema but what would eventually become popularised as the 'slasher'. It remains a fresh and compelling operatic thriller from one of the great masters of Italian horror.
A model employed by a lavish fashion house is brutally murdered by a killer wearing a white mask and black coat. It becomes clear that the murderer was trying to retrieve a diary kept by the model. While the police attempt to figure out who is perpetrating these crimes, the masked killer works their way through more and more models in their hunt for the diary and the secrets it contains.
Bava's painstaking craftsmanship shines through in his shaping of the film's stunning set pieces. His vivid use of colour and exquisite framing bring the Hitchcockian mystery to life, making it one of the most visually extravagant films of the decade.
