Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel is an ultra-stylish, black and white portrait of youth alienation. The film follows Rusty James, a young delinquent played by Matt Dillon, whose devotion to his absent older brother The Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke) is tested when his brother returns to their hometown. One of Coppola's smaller-scale triumphs, the film's simmering energy is supported by both an inventive score by The Police's Stewart Copeland and a cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Tom Waits, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Dennis Hopper.
