About
The debut experimental documentary from Ho-Chunk artist and filmmaker Sky Hopinka maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore explores the intersections of Native American culture, personal narratives, and the power of ancestral connection.
Centred on the Chinookan death myth (in which a coyote and wolf discuss the afterlife), the film follows the respective journeys of two individuals, Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier, as they reflect upon existence, death and the afterlife. Filled with breathtaking landscapes and intimate moments, the film’s poetic narration combined with traditional songs, and stunning cinematography, creates a meditative exploration of identity, memory and the role of humanity in this world – and the next.
