About
Please note: The screening of Udo Kier's short film Last Trip to Hamburg will not take place as advertised in the quarterly brochure. The screening of Wolf Gremm's Kamikaze '89 will still proceed as planned at 3.00pm Sat 30 June.
Fassbinder's friend Wolf Gremm directed him in his final onscreen appearance at the age of 36, in the cyberpunk thriller Kamikaze '89. Fassbinder stars as Jansen, an alcoholic, leopard-print wearing rogue detective in retro-futuristic Germany. When threats of bombing are made against the totalitarian conglomerate that controls all media, Jansen is given 72 hours to crack the case. But his investigation quickly takes a dark turn, leading him into a labyrinth of murder and corporate conspiracy. Based on the novel Murder on the 31st Floor, Kamikaze '89 is a dystopian vision of 1989 rendered in eye-popping neon and set to an eerie techno soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. Fassbinder collaborators fill out the rest of the cast, including Günther Kaufmann, Brigitte Mira, and Franco Nero, as well as a brief appearance from Frank Ripploh (director and star of Taxi Zum Klo).
