About
Please note this screening of Berlin, Symphony of a Great City is with the film's original soundtrack. This screening is free.
A gem of a City Symphony, Berlin, Symphony of a Great City boasts all the hallmarks of this film movement: playfulness, visual inventiveness, experimentation with framing and a energetic rhythmic pace. This exhilarating documentary-poem is fashioned by Walter Ruttmann, Carl Mayer, and Karl Freund, three great filmmakers trained in the German avant garde and commercial cinema. Together they portray a vast cross section of life in Berlin edited around rigorous musical principles, popularising Dziga Vertov’s kino-eye technique.
