Herzog has repeatedly stated that the film has no connection to Abel Ferrara's cult classic Bad Lieutenant 1992 other than the fact that a "corrupt policeman as the central character." Certainly, the grim tragedy of Harvey Keitel's protagonist in Ferrara's film is a world apart from the gleeful immorality of Cage's lieutenant. Cage has rarely been as potent on screen as he is in this film – with his wild-eyed commitment driving the ferocious energy of the film. He is ably supported by Eva Mendes as his girlfriend, Val Kilmer as his partner, Brad Dourif as his bookie, and Xzibit as a gangster kingpin. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a deeply funny and exhilarating neo-noir that takes pleasure in showing the extremes its protagonist is willing to explore.
